ABOUT THE FARM AND FAMILY

The Unger Family

Born and raised on a farm, Matt Unger has farming in his blood. As a third generation farmer and a graduate from Oregon State University with a BS in Agriculture, Matt brings over 30 years of experience and knowledge to his farm.

Matt and wife, Kathy, started Unger Farms, Inc together in 1984. Today they continue their passion for providing the highest quality produce alongside their four children, who are very active in the farm's production and look forward to continuing the family business for years to come.

The Land

Adding another 63 acres to their original 80 in early 2010 brings the total acreage to 144. These two parcels of land were once a large dairy farm prior to the Unger’s 80 acre purchase back in 1984. Everyone is happy to see the land back together under one family.

How We Sell

Originally sending most produce to the cannery, Unger Farms has evolved into a fresh market/wholesale farm. It all started with one farmers’ market, the Hillsboro Farmers' Market. Year after year, as the Ungers built their loyal customer base, they continued to add more outlets to their growing list. Now, 30 years later, the Ungers attend 10 farmers' markets in a given week, sell to 20 + grocery stores/roadside stands/restaurants/school lunch programs, and added their newest pride and joy: Unger’s Farm Store.

Produce

As customer demand rose, so did the expectation of fresh, quality berries. Ever since the Ungers first took interest in fresh market sales, Matt has not stopped looking for the best varieties. What began as raising just strawberries and cucumbers was no longer sufficient. Cucumbers were eventually cut from the list while more berries and a U-pick area were added to the mix. Our list of crops now includes blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, table grapes and what we’re known best for: strawberries.

Sustainable Farming

We believe in farming in such a way that is safe for the environment, employees and customers and that will ensure many future generations to be able to farm the same land and yield the same quality as today.

Our sustainable practices include but are not limited to: weekly field monitoring for soil and plant health, drip irrigation for water conservation, plastic on rows and straw between rows for week control and cleanliness, and employee safety training.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM): An environmentally friendly, common sense approach to controlling pests & disease.  For more information on IPM please click HERE

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is a voluntary audit that verifies that fruits and vegetables are produced, packed, handled, and stored as safely as possible to minimize risks of microbial food safety hazards. For more information on GAP please click HERE
